An article appeared in my local paper today about residents in the Spanish Springs area complaining about the local airport.
Apparently, residents are concerned after a small plane crashed into the roof of a house that future airplanes may fly into the roofs of their houses, crash into buses, or destroy the playgrounds at local schools.
The key to the argument is this: The airport was there first.
That's right folks. People who willingly moved next to an airport are now calling for the airport to be moved. They even signed on the dotted line acknowledging they knew about the existence of the airport.
Now, the startled residents are acting puzzled: "Wait. There's an airport next to my house?!"
Cristal Gonzalez lives next door to the residence that was struck by the plane. "I know the airport may have been there first," said Gonzalez, who moved into her new home in March. "But that doesn't mean anything in the whole scheme of things."
The whole scheme of things!? The airport has been in that location since 1970.
What's the airport supposed to do? "All right boys--let's start tearing up the landing strips. Get that control tower out of here. We're in the way."
I believe this situation is best summed up by Max Bartess, airport manager:
"The airport is not going anywhere."

hey, I live further down the way from where this happened. I remember the first time we drove to where they were building and saw the sign that said we were headed towards the airport. And I distinctly remember saying to my wife, "What are the chances...?"
And here we are. A plane crashed into a house. But now we're good, right? I don't expect another plane crash like this for another ten years.
I read an opinion editorial about this in the paper. It seems most residents in the Reno/Sparks area (at least I hope) also see the insanity in Crystal's ignorant, selfish response. At least she's not the majority! Then I would move to a new city. . . promptly.
