I got my haircut today. I now know why I choose not to watch television. The lady seated to my right was getting her hair colored and, at the same time, was reading one of those funky "entertainment" magazines.
She droned on and on and on and on about this celebrity and that celebrity. At one point, I heard the stylist and the customer banter this volley back and forth:
Stylist: "Ugh, I think Jessica [Simpson] is way better off without Nick [Lachey]."
Customer: "I....don't know. There's something about Jessica."
Stylist: "What do you mean?"
Customer: "It's in her eyes. Look at her eyes. She can't be trusted."
Step aside Siggy Freud. Dr. Phil, your ten minutes of fame is almost up. I'm going to sign up for a crash course in pseudo-psycho babble at my local haircut shop. Maybe not -- the discussion of whether we should "trust" Jessica Simpson was quickly followed by a deeply moving analysis of whether she looks better as a blond with curls or straight hair.
The topics of discussion were as wide and vast as the Grand Canyon. I sat there, amused, for the next twenty minutes listening to those two ramble incessantly about inconsequential celebrity "life" and television shows.
Too bad we don't have a mute button on the remote control of life.
