My wife, a 7th grade English teacher, recently finished her first year teaching. Bewildered and slightly ruffled, she was looking forward to some time off, reading, and relaxing by the pool. Indeed, summer can be a difficult time for teachers.
I have taken a new position as a grant writer for a local Christian-based company. It is an exciting opportunity, one that affords me a flexible schedule and time to write. I digress.
My wife has had one full week off from school and has enjoyed every moment of it. She has read, played NES—Zelda is about to be reclassified as an addictive substance—and run errands. However, her favorite pastime is sleeping. My wife loves to sleep; she enjoys long naps, short naps, cat naps, naps in the car (while I drive), sleeping on planes, on her sister's couch, in the bathroom, wherever...she just loves to sleep.
Each day, I rise early and head to the office to help ministries find funding for their programs. My wife stays home. I return to my story.
Two days ago, I slowly awoke from my slumber and gazed over at my wonderful wife. She rolled over and looked in my direction. Her sleep-filled, glassy eyes opened and she whispered, “What time is it?”
I answered, “Six in the morning.” I sat up in bed and stretched my arms.
Her eyes quickly shut—I thought that was the end of the conversation, but she mumbled, “What day is it?”
I quickly responded, “Don’t trouble yourself with the small details—that is of no concern to someone on summer vacation.” She shifted her head on her pillow and fell asleep.
Ah, the thrill of summer vacation. I wonder if she's awake yet this morning?
